Day by Day App
We created a new iOS app for the National Wellness Institute to help clients live a healthier life.
TIME: 10 DAYS, NOV 2022 | TEAM: JULIA IBRI | ROLE: USER RESEARCH, WIREFRAMING, VISUAL DESIGN | TOOLS: FIGMA.
How might we help the clients of the National Wellness Institute adopt and commit to a health-improving routine?
This was our 4th project for the UX/UI bootcamp, this was the challenge:
The national wellness institute has been slow to catch up with technology and has seen a substantial drop in memberships. They want to find a way to offer more value to its members, they want designers to rethink how people can adopt and commit to a health-improving routine.
Why did we choose depression?
Competitive Analysis
There was an aopportunity where we could stand out, most of the practical apps didn’t have an evaluation for anxiety and depression to detect which activities suited them better depending on the severity of their symptoms, they lacked community and reward system.
We identified the most downloaded apps on the App Store for anxiety and depression.
The features we couldn’t miss if we wanted to be competitive were: progress tracking, activity registration and goal setting customization.
Meet Guilty Gaby
We collected data from 112 surveys, which gave us the roadmap to deepen our understanding by doing 6 qualitative interviews where we asked how they were feeling, the severity of their symptoms, what was working and their pain points.
After clustering them in an affinity map this were our major insights:
Lack of information, 37.5% didn’t get a diagnose and 27.3% didn’t receive any therapeutic help.
Lack of support, based on our research we found anxiety and depression support groups are helpful to make them feel understood.
Mistrust, forgetfulness and lack of connection were the main reasons why people wouldn’t follow up to make the necessary changes.
How might we help Gaby feel proud of herself and feel that she is making progress?
How might we educate Gaby so she understands what she is going through?
Problem Statement
People who suffer from anxiety and depression need to feel supported, informed, understood and guided, because lack of constant motivation, organization and negative feelings prevent them from feeling they are making progress increasing negative feelings.
Ideation and MVP Statement
We used the Crazy 8 technique and grouped the features using the MosCow method. According to Gaby’s needs and taking into account the National Wellness Institute’s musts we decided to prioritize the following features.
The goal of this app is to offer tools, information and support for people who suffer light to moderate depression and anxiety through personalized tasks called rituals.
Users are able to customize their profiles by answering a series of questions regarding their symptoms, needs and goals. Each action will be rewarded, they will be able to see their progress visually on graphics.
By providing this features, user’s will have a sense of accomplishment, progress and clarity which will keep them motivated during their process.
Lo - fi and Concept Testing
For our concept testing we had some feedback we decided to iterate on.
First one was that our app was not motivating, which failed to accomplish the requirements of our client. After the iteration testers mentioned it was overwhelming, touching one of the main points of Guilty Gaby.
How could we make this more fun and engaging?
We looked at apps like Duo Lingo and Headspace. Duo Lingo gamifies the experience making it more engaging and Head Space, gives a sense of familiarity with the use of illustrations creating a connection with the user which ends up wanting to come back for more. We decided to incorporate both.
The second feedback we received was for the graphics. What was the purpose of sharing this graphic with the user? Was this really what the user wanted to know? We decided to iterate so that they would be able to compare their mood registration against other activities and give them a short insight on what this means to boost their motivation.
Mid - fi and Usability Test
During the usability test we found some screens were creating confusion and the display of the ritual’s path going downwards was creating a sense of lowering energy and motivation instead of increasing it, we iterated this for our hi-fi.
Based on research, people with this condition didn’t want another productivity app but did want to see their progress, we were careful in the wording to address the negative connotation for them and instead of goals decided to use the word rituals.
Visual Competitive Analysis
Sanvello and Moodfit were the two apps in our field. Sanvello had really good UI but it was visually overwhelming , their typography and colors made it look professional but serious and impersonal, whereas Moodfit was functional but had poor UI and was really text heavy.
We decided to include Headspace, because based on research we found users felt mostly connected to Headspace because of their clear rules, simple language, tone and the personalized illustrations making it seem more real. The boldness and roundness of their letters made it also more friendly and approachable.
Look and Feel
We wanted to reflect trust, fun, friendliness and relaxation. We faced some problems while trying to combine the colors we chose, we solved it by blending them together and giving it a more pastel tone. This resulted in success, according to feedback it gave a sense of peace and relaxation.
We opted for two fonts, one more friendly and one with serif to balance out the softness of the colors to give it a more professional look.
We decided for more organic figures to loosen up the sense of structure because healing is not a linear process. We used shadows, size and opacity to indicate hierarchy and guidance on our design.
And finally we created an illustration to make it light and fun and create a connection with the audience.
Did we succeed?
We used desirability hub to test our design. Some of the comments that let us know we accomplished our design goals were: it was warm and inviting, clear and visual, the brain makes it more personable, the gradient is soothing, softer colors are calming, round shapes pleasing to the eyes and it is friendly and clear.
